Age Difference Calculator by Year
Enter two birth years for a quick year-level age gap. Ideal when you know the year of birth but not the exact date.
When a Birth-Year Estimate Is Enough
Year-only calculations are the fastest way to compare two people's ages when precise dates are unavailable or unimportant.
Not every situation calls for full-date precision. Historical records, ancestry research, decade-based surveys, and quick trivia all work fine with birth years alone. This calculator takes two four-digit years and returns the difference as a single integer  no months, no days, no ambiguity.
Keep in mind that two people born in the same calendar year could still be up to 364 days apart in age. If you need exact months and days, use the full-date birthdate calculator on the homepage or the days calculator.
Year-Gap Questions
How accurate is a year-only age difference?
A year-only result has an accuracy range of ±1 year because it ignores the month and day of birth. For example, someone born in December 1990 and someone born in January 1991 are almost the same age but show a 1-year gap in this calculator.
When is a year-only calculation useful?
Year comparisons are common in genealogy research, generation labeling (Millennials vs Gen Z), school cohort analysis, and quick trivia about historical figures. They trade precision for speed.
What birth years does this calculator accept?
The field accepts years from 1900 to 2100. Entering years outside that range is blocked to prevent unrealistic results. For historical figures born before 1900, the main birthdate calculator accepts any Gregorian date.
